AI Revolution: How does it compare with PC, Internet & other revolutions?

The Road to Glory

The PC revolution started in the late 70s and became mainstream in the 80s and 90s. Large players emerged from their garages, literally like Apple, Microsoft & Dell to name a few.

The rise of the PC, lead to the internet & cloud revolution which started in the mid 90s. Large players like Google, Amazon, & Facebook have stepped up and claimed the limelight with humble beginnings like many of the PC startups. There are other trends that have also been called revolutions like Web 3.0 (blockchain), DNA Sequencing, Internet of Things, and 3D Printing to name a few. Many of them although groundbreaking don't seem as intriguing as AI, at least yet!

The AI revolution is forming before our eyes and will rival the contributions of the other revolutions we just mentioned. So how do the different revolutions compare and how do we flourish from the knowledge we received from these previous revolutions. I hope it will be helpful for you for me to share my thoughts on the comparisons:

Exponential Growth: Similar to PC & Internet revolutions we will see new players emerge but we will see continuation of the winners of the PC and Internet age continue to grow with AI contributions. As an example, Microsoft won with the PC age, but sustained its exponential growth with the internet age and will continue to do the same in the AI age. We se similar examples with Google and Amazon in how they are some of the biggest players in the AI age.

Market Bubble with unicorns emerging: We may be closer to 1995 than the 2000 internet stock market bubble for AI but there will be euphoric valuations and potentially consequential losses for some investors. But at the same time, there will be some unicorns that will emerge unfazed and it will be like investing in Microsoft in 1984 or Amazon in 2000. This is inevitable.

Adoption will be Slower: The PC revolution took a decade to become truly mainstream. The internet revolution was much faster. The AI revolution will be slower than the internet revolution, more comparable to the PC revolution. The reason for this is that AI although has been easier to use, it is more difficult to deploy. Although internet and PC revolutions had threats and hurdles, the AI revolution faces greater hurdles with regard to privacy and intellectual property protection that will reduce the adoption rate. Because this there will be huge winners who by adopting technology early will benefit from competitive advantage.

Transformation: The PC transformed how people work, the Internet transformed how people communicated, AI will transform industries and professional such as those in healthcare, finance, transportation, and manufacturing. It could also lead to the development of new products and services that we cannot yet imagine.

Higher Regulations: The PC and Internet age created regulatory hurdles with issues surrounding cybersecurity, privacy and intellectual property issues but AI will bring forth a lot more regulation. The AI revolution raises concerns about job displacement, bias and discrimination, and the potential for AI systems to be used for malicious purposes. This is likely to trigger significant regulatory and policy discussions around issues such as data ownership, liability for AI-related accidents, and the development of ethical guidelines for AI.
